Chaturanga is not part of traditional Hatha yoga. It comes from modern yoga styles, particularly Ashtanga and Vinyasa, which incorporate more dynamic movements.

No it’s not. Chaturanga is part of the very old sequence of danda exercises practiced by Indian wrestlers and other fitness trainers since ancient times. But Hatha Yoga was not adapted for the purpose of physical exercise until the 1900s, mainly by Tirumalai Krishnamacharya and his pupils Pattabhi Jois and B.K.S. Iyengar. It was probably them who added Chaturanga to Hatha Yoga as a way to link the flowing movements of their Vinyasa style, which borrowed much from gymnastics and other fitnesses exercises that had never before been part of Yoga. B.K.S. Iyengar’s 1966 book Light on Yoga is the first Hatha Yoga text that mentions Chaturanga. read less
